WITH
NEW YORK

  BREAN will be linked with
one of the largest cities in the
world when a new telephone
cable system stretches across
the Atlantic.
  By 1989,  the seaside village
will have direct links to New
York thanks to the 250
million project.
  Provided jointly by Cable
and Wireless PLC and
Teloptik of the USA, the line
Is the first privately-operated
system to span the ocean.

Cableship

  It will be operated in the UK
by Mercury Communications,
with the laying work carried
out by the cableship, Cable
Venture, now based in Avon-
mouth Docks.
  The communication line,
capable of carrying over
12,000 calls at once, is made
up of hair-thin strands of
glass, with a greater capacity
than the usual copper wire. It
will be an alternative to British
Telecom's fibre optic line, due
to be completed In 1988.
