Geo. L.B. White Esq.,
General Manager,
The Commercial Cable Company,
London.
Dear George,
Cable Beacon
Thank you for your letter 881/PL dated 4th June
with
enclosed cheque for £40 in favour of Mr. G.L. Holtby.
This morning at low water Holtby accompanied me
through
the mud towards the beacon site; owing to the extremely heavy and
worsening going I did not attempt the full distance but scanned the
site through a pocket telescope from a position as far out as I judged
it to be within my capabilities. Apart from one piece not completely
submerged in the mud. which Mr. Holtby tells me 1s part of the top
with some of the wooden staff attached, there is nothing to be seen
so I think that we may regard this as satisfactory demolition; I have
therefore handed over the Coy's cheque and obtained Mr. Holtby's
signature to the enclosed receipt. For his assistance in this
morning's inspection Mr. Holtby charged the sum of four pounds which
I have paid in cash and his receipt, for this amount is attached.
It is doubtful it a boat would have been of much
assistance
in making this reconnaissance as it would mean going out on a receding
tide, holding the boat in approximate position until it grounded or
standing off some distance from the water's edge, and then in either
case waiting until the tide was high enough to make the return landing.
As a matter of interest a cutting from today's Weston
Mercury 1s enclosed from which you will see that Mr. Holtby effected
the demolition by means of an explosive charge.
Kindest regards.
Yours very truly,
