                                                                                      30th April, 1968

Mr. E. A. Mulholland,
"Highfield,"
55, Manor Road,
Weston-super-Mare,
Somerset.

Dear Ted,

Thanks for your letter of the 20th inst. but I am
sure you will agree it does not take us very far on and what is more
I cannot agree with Watts' opinion as to its continuing a hazard if
it were felled.

My understanding is that it comprises of a 28'
iron tube, 2' in diameter at the base tapering to: 14" at the top,
and it carries a wooden mast which could be some 20 odd foot long,
which in turn carries the marker (formerly an iron cage). This latter
figure according to our records might be over-stated, but what
appears very clear is that there is a mud bottom there and I shall
require more convincing than I have had to date that the problem
cannot be disposed of by burning through the iron base at low tide
when the mud is uncovered, because if it never did sink into the mud,
an iron tube 20" in diameter could hardly be classed as a hazard to
navigation.

Please have another think on the matter and, if needs
be, why not have a word with Mr. G.L. Holtby, 47 Hutton Park, Hutton
Moor Road, Weston, who at one time wrote us with regard to recovery of
our cables and may have a suggestion re the beacon.

In passing I am surprised at Mr. Watts pessimism,
because looking through the file I find he was most helpful and
resourceful some thirty odd years ago when he dismantled the iron cage
and substituted it by a top marker of oak slats.

Kind regards.
